Jim Groom from Battle of the Apocalypse… the speaker mentioned that we as educators are using things that applied to an older generation to teach the younger generation, therefore there is confusion and lack of interest. Due to crisis being blown out of proportion we as educators have become Distracted and disconnected with the times. He stated with DS 106 students were able to connect and have fun. I believe that due to the pressures of the No Child Left Behind Act a lot of educators and administrators are forgetting what education is really about and what it involves. In order to teach you must know your students and find ways to connect. Most teachers are not connecting, therefore, students are not learning and not motivated t. This generation is thrilled and acquainted with technology, which is constantly evolving. Technology will be a good tool to motivate and inspire students to become educated. This video Speak On It, discuses the problems within education as well and some solutions on how these crisis can be solved
You made a great point there that teachers are not connecting with their students in a way that will make the students become interested and motivated. Times change and as educators and people of a society where we are highly involved with technology, we need to evolve with time as well. Educators do need to find ways to make their students more interested and to show them that we can connect.=)
I really like the comment about teachers needing ‘to know there students in order to find ways to connect.’ It’s definitely hard to build relationships with students in a space fostered by testing standards rather than creativity and critical thinking.
And technology has a possible hand in supporting connections, but I don’t really think that it’s tech alone that inspires, it’s how you allow students to use it. Remember Jim described the value of the ‘My Little Ponies’ being pepper sprayed animated GIF, not because it’s this amazing image, but because it’s an alternative way to showcase the absurdity of the pepper spraying students. And that’s critical thinking demonstrated in a way I can imagine any standardized test would allow.

I agree that No Child Left Behind Act is a huge reason why education is becoming such a problem area for this generation of kids. Teachers have this “teach to the test” mentality and that does not provide a well rounded education for students. In my post I actually explained the funding of education and its the fallacy of dept. of education. Great post by you!
Dearest Belinda,
Lets start with, awesome posting! I agree very much with what you posed on the connection theory. This is a crucial part of learning. The connection and relation to the content and the student. I do also agree that teachers of older ages live by a completely different agenda then students of this generation. I think that technology is an important contributer to the educational system but nevertheless I ponder that it may just be out culture. Yes, it is true around the world computers are used- but not everywhere around the world do computers exist in the classroom and with this I base my theory that our generation is relying more and more on technology meanwhile the older teachers cannot relate. But of course the teacher should always be flexible but at the same time I think that the old way is possible with the new strategies we’ve concocted.

A lady in the video really made a great point about No Child left Behind. It is really a good topic that raises awareness that teachers are definitely not the problems. There are so many different problems including the students. Sometime’s its the fact if a parent actually has some type of interest in their child’s life, etc. I agree that parents should teach their kids and be more engaging in their kid’s life. Restriction on learning new things including sex ed and gays in schools definitely isn’t good. Education should be free and a free-learning experience.
